Last weekend saw the annual EGS “home” weekend away descend on the Forest of Dean Golf Club in Gloucestershire. 22 golfers all searching for glory!
Friday’s round kicked off in the now traditional style of Zane Sheldrake producing his 2 litre hip flask on the first tee for all of us to have a bracing snifter of port and brandy before starting our first round. Good conditions saw some good scores on a course nobody had played before (not strictly true as I realised after about 7 holes that I’d played it about 30 years ago!). Winners on the day were Nearest the Pin in 2 for Stuart Wren, Nearest the Pin for Kulbir with Longest Drive to Nick Syer. Runner-up on the day was Stuart with 36 points and our early clubhouse leader with 37 points was Kev Ashton. A special mention to Zane and his hip flask though. With minimal help from his playing partners he managed to finish the hip flask before he finished his round. Needless to say it didn’t do his score on the back nine much good but the upside meant that when he played on Saturday those 9 holes were a completely new experience for him!
Saturday saw pleasant if a bit breezy conditions. Course honours went to Nick Gabb for NTP2, NTP to Steve Pack and LD to Stuart (bit of a shock that one). Yours truly was runner-up on the day with 39 points and the winner (not that I’m bitter about it) with 40 points was Nick Gabb. Saturday night saw a few hardy souls venture into Coleford but most of the stories aren’t repeatable in public!
Sunday dawned and some of our merry band were still in the bar to welcome it, top performance especially from some of the elder statesmen on tour! On the course conditions were blustery with an early shower followed a bit later by a torrential downpour which fortunately only lasted for around half hour or so. NTP2 on Sunday went to Nick Pedlar, NTP to Chris Woods and LD to Paul Field. Runner-up on the day with 36 points was Rob Syer and the winner was Paul Wheeler with a great score of 41 considering the weather conditions.
The race for the title was tied on 76 points between Nick Gabb and Paul Wheeler however Nick prevailed on countback.
For full results and scores please see the table at the bottom of the page.
I’d like to thank Rob for all his work in sorting out the cards, batting order etc. In our rush to get away on Sunday I forgot to thank him and also Nick Pedlar for helping out. I’d also like to give Brian May a mention; Brian managed to play all 54 holes which given his health was some feat.
All in all it was a great weekend which I think everyone enjoyed. Roll on Portugal!!
